Poetry Contest

The Calmar Public Library is hosting a Poetry Contest in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program..

The contest is open to children aged 6 -12yrs and 13 - 17yrs. The theme and title will be Jungles!

Poems can be submitted in any style and are not to exceed 60 lines. 

We will not accept any works with racist comments and/or foul language.  Any reference to and/or naming of an actual person or people may result in removal of entry from the contest (will be at the discretion of the judges).  Previously published works and works forthcoming elsewhere cannot be considered.

The contest starts July 5th and will close on August 16th. Three Calmar Public Library Board members will be chosen to judge all poetry, and a winner will be announced on August 27th.  First prize in both age categories will be $100 with a runner-up prize of $50.

If you submit a poem to our contest it will entitle you to one ballot in our weekly summer reading contest with one poem entry per child.

Winners and runner-ups will be displayed and published in our library and on our web page.

Entry forms will be available in the library starting July 5th. We will only accept entries dropped off in our library– no emailed, faxed or mailed entries.

Calmar Public Library News

  Summer Reading Program; Destination Jungles!

 We are pleased to present this years Summer Reading Program Destination Jungles! Running for 6 weeks throughout the summer months starting July 5th. We will be showing a different jungle themed movie every Wednesday and have 4 entertainers booked. We also will be having a poetry contest starting July 5th with cash prizes. We will be having weekly prize draws filled with jungle themed items and one grand prize to be drawn at the end of our summer program. Canadian Tire has graciously donated a Hyper MotoBike for our grand prize draw. Stop by the library grab a booklet, roll the dice, watch a movie, enter our contests and have a great summer!    Audience members enjoyed the familiar music of the award winning  TV series ”Ballooner Landing”.  The writers and creators;  Sandy and Lee Paley encouraged participants to laugh, to sing and to play along.                  

                

   Kindergarten comes to visit!

 Calmar Elementary School came out on a field trip to visit the library. Carol our Head Librarian gave them all a warm welcome and read to the class. Lee-Anne was our hostess for our second class. We were thrilled to have the Kindergarten classes come and visit.

 Our preschool Reading Program has finished for the season we will start up again in the fall. Thanks to everyone who came out and read with Lee-Anne.

Lee-Anne has been busy building, copying, cutting and constructing fun and fabulous things to do here in the library all summer long. Participants from 5-12 years old are encouraged to stop by the Calmar Public Library to roll themeselves into this years TD Summer Reading Program. This years theme is Destination Jungle. A self guided safari will wind players through the jungle via the Jungle Juxtaposition game board. Participants will be prompted, encouraged and rewarded for setting and reaching reading goals.

All 15 minute reading increments should be recorded weeking in the reading record found inside your booklets. Every 2 hours of reading time accumulated earns the participant an entry into the grand prize draw. Participants will roll the game dice, once weekly. Complete and return the weekly game sheet before friday to enter in one of six weekly prize draws. Dont miss out on all the fun drop by the library starting July 5th for your free booklet, poster and stickers.
